Photography Book Captures Old, New Berkshire Scenes

“There were some oohs and aahs at Wednesday night’s launch party for “A Portrait of the Northern Berkshires” as guests rediscovered some local scenes that they hadn’t appreciated in awhile and were introduced to the area’s newest residents in the arts.”-Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff

The scenes — some 100 — are contained in the softcover collaboration of photographer Kelly Lee and artist Eric Rudd, who wrote the backgrounds for Lee’s photos.

“There are a lot of reasons I wanted to do the book,” Rudd told the small crowd sipping wine in the lobby of the Williamstown Financial Center, after being introduced by MoutainOne Financial Partners CEO Stephen G. Crowe. “It’s just a great showcase of the area. It came about because I wanted to document the great changes in the art world and art studios and the energy that fills the old mills. … everything from Mass MoCA to the new art spaces.”

Home Buyer Training for Artists

Berkshire Creative and Massachusetts Fair Housing Center Offer First Time Home Buyer Training for Artists.

Saturday, December 6 and Saturday, December 13

9:30 am – 2:00 pm

Berkshire Bank, 66 West Street, Pittsfield, MA

Assets for Artists – a project of Berkshire Creative, MASS MoCA, MCLA’s Berkshire Cultural Resource Center and Pittsfield’s Office of Cultural Development, with funding from Berkshire Bank Foundation – is partnering with the Massachusetts Fair Housing Center to offer a two-part training seminar for artists interested in learning more about the home buying process. Participants will learn how to determine what they can afford and what will meet their artistic needs (live-work space, 2-4 unit properties with rental income, etc.). They will also hear from expert speakers on such topics as choosing and working with a real estate broker, making an offer on a house, comparing mortgage offers, applying for a mortgage, securing down payment assistance, obtaining legal representation for preparing and reviewing documents, selecting appropriate home insurance, utilizing a home inspector, preparing for life after the home purchase, and more.

The training will be tailored to the needs and challenges of artists in the Berkshires. Attendance at both sessions is required in order for the participant to receive “certification” from the state and become eligible for certain first-time home buyer mortgage and down payment assistance programs.

Artists who would like to participate in this two-part certified home buyer training should contact Blair Benjamin at MASS MoCA (413-664-4481 x8104 or blair@massmoca.org) to express interest or request more information. A limited number of slots will be available, offered first-come, first-serve. Pre-registration is required.

Norman Rockwell Receives Highest Recognition

Norman Rockwell Museum awarded National Humanities Medal-America’s highest recognition of work by individuals and institutions in the field of the humanities.

Monday, November 17, Laurie Norton Moffatt Norman Rockwell Museum Director/ CEO, Berkshire Creative Co-Founder and board member, accepted the National Humanities Medal on behalf of the Norman Rockwell Museum.

One of nine individuals and institutions honored at the White House event, the Norman Rockwell Museum was the only museum among the winners.

“Norman Rockwell Museum is deeply honored to be the recipient of the National Humanities Medal,” said Ms. Norton Moffatt, who has served as director of the museum since 1986. “Norman Rockwell’s great gift was to capture on canvas our common humanity and crystallize universal feelings through his sensitive depictions of life’s fleeting moments. He was unsurpassed in illuminating the concerns and joys of everyday Americans. For 40 years, it has been the museum’s great pleasure to contribute to the field of American visual studies by exploring the art of Norman Rockwell and the illustrators who preceded and followed him.”

Fittingly, the medallion presented to Ms. Norton Moffatt at the White House was designed by illustrator and former medal winner —one of over 400 illustrators whose work has been presented by Norman Rockwell Museum.

Ang Lee Film, “Taking Woodstock”, Boosts Region’s Economy

“Executive producer Celia Costas said that while the numbers were still being calculated as of this week, it’s estimated that the film contributed at least $8 million to the local economy, some of which went to Berkshire County hotels and restaurants.” -Benning W. De La Mater Berkshire Eagle Article

Lee personally requested a private party at Kim’s Dragon on West Housatonic Street. Actors Eugene Levy and Emile Hirsch stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Pittsfield. And dozens of crew members stayed at the Pittsfield Ramada, Vacation Village and Jiminy Peak.

Local hardware stores and equipment supply companies across the county were used to stock everything from PVC to portable heaters.

Mike Debella, 44, owner of the Hitchinpost Cafe in New Lebanon, said the town will never forget Lee and his crew.

“I was able to pay off my mortgage,” said DeBella, who helped cater for the film. “Economically it was awesome, and it came at a bad time in our economy.”
