Creative Challenge Index Moves Forward

raise-hand-in-classYesterday at the Massachusetts State House, the Joint Committee on Education heard public testimony on the Creative Challenge Index (House 3547).

The bill’s lead sponsors, Rep. Dan Bosley (D-N. Adams) and Senator Stan Rosenberg (D-Amherst), were joined fellow supporters by Dan Hunter, MAASH Executive Director , Isa Zimmerman of the STEM movement (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), Jonathan Rappaport of the National Arts Learning Collaborative as well as Mary Forte Hayes and Dennis Richards of the Massachusetts Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (MASCD).

Through the Creative Challenge Index, schools will be measured by how much opportunity they provide for creative and critical thinking. Currently, individual achievement (measured by the MCAS) is used to determine school-wide success. The Creative Challenge Index will measure the overall environment of a school.

The Creative Challenge Index will now be considered by the Joint Committee on Education, which will then provide a recommendation to the House and Senate leadership.
