Hancock Shaker Village Launches Artist-In-Residence Program

Hancock Shaker Village announces The Studio at Hancock Shaker Village artist-in-residence program as part of  50th anniversary.

Master woodworker Steve Grasselli will be in residence, creating one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture commissioned by the public.   Grasselli will work in full view of the visiting public in The Studio, located in the 1835 Tan House in the center of the historic Village.  Clients may commission Mr. Grasselli to reproduce any piece of furniture from the Hancock Shaker Village collection, or they may choose to work with the artisan to create Shaker inspired pieces of his own design.  Clients may select any combination of woods and finishes.

Each piece, destined to be an heirloom, will be signed by the artisan and numbered.  Clients will receive a certificate of authenticity, linking each special piece to the genuine object in HSV’s collection and documenting the piece’s creation.  A copy of each certificate will be kept in the HSV historic archives.  In addition to being able to watch their creation come to life, clients may wish to have a behind-the-scenes look at the original piece from HSV’s 22,000 object collection from which their unique piece is reproduced, or which served as inspiration.

Steve Grasselli is a master artisan and teacher.  In addition to his hand-crafting of graceful furniture, Grasselli teaches private and small group woodworking classes and oval box making at Hancock Shaker Village.  Grasselli’s knowledge of HSV’s collection and historic furniture making techniques assures that each commission attains the grace and simplicity of the Shaker original.
