SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and the formation, growth and success of small businesses nationwide. Founded in 1964, the organization now has nearly 400 chapters throughout the United States and its territories, with over 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate their time and expertise as business counselors.

SCORE mentors entrepreneurs through one-to-one business advising sessions on a full range of business topics. In the 1970s, when SCORE chapters were formed, SCORE expanded its services to offer workshops and seminars on a variety of business issues. In 1996, SCORE ventured online and began providing small business advice via email to meet the entrepreneur’s need to have service on an around-the-clock basis.

SCORE’s 11,200 volunteer counselors have more than 600 business skills. Volunteers are working or retired business owners, executives and corporate leaders who share their wisdom and lessons learned in business.

Based on the findings of the Impact Study of SBA Entrepreneurial Development Resources 2007-2008, SCORE estimates that our volunteers helped create more than 25,000 new jobs nationwide in 2007, or one for every seven new clients. SCORE also helped create 19,732 new small businesses in 2007, according to an SBA report sent to Congress.

SCORE Western Massachusetts Chapter 228 services all the counties of Western Massachusetts including Hampton, Hampshire, Franklin and the Berkshires. SCORE offers its services in all these counties and it has counselors residing in all counties. It currently operates with over 40 members.
