PITTSFIELD (May 8, 2013) – A special screening of “Ra.One”, the hit Indian science-fiction superhero film, will take place on Wednesday, May 15 at The Beacon Cinema in Pittsfield. A presentation by Jeff Kleiser, the visual effects supervisor of the film, will precede the screening. The event is a joint fundraiser for the Berkshire Film and Media Commission [BFMC] and Williamstown Film Festival [WFF].
“Ra.One” was directed by Anubhav Sinha, and stars Shah Rukh Khan, often referred to as “The King of Bollywood”. It follows a video game developer’s world spiraling out of control when his shape-shifting indestructible virtual creation becomes all too real. The film – which features spectacular chases, musical numbers, and a runaway train – received a number of honors including the National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards and International Indian Film Academy Awards.
The visual effects, executed by Red Chillies VFX under the supervision of Kleiser, won the award for Best Special Effects at nine award ceremonies, in addition to receiving critical, industry and audience acclaim.
“Ra.One” had over 3,000 visual effects, shots and sequences, whereas Bollywood films typically have 100 to 200 shots. “We are thrilled to be able to show ‘Ra.One’ in the Berkshires and have Jeff give us a unique behind-the-scenes look into the complex visual effects for the film,” says BFMC’s executive director Diane Pearlman.
Kleiser’s pioneering work in computer animation and groundbreaking visual effects has been seen in films including “Stargate,” “Judge Dredd,” and “X-Men”. He has directed ambitious CG-animated stereoscopic films and served as an industry expert in interviews with The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and The ABC Evening News with Peter Jennings. Kleiser is a Williamstown resident and a board member of both BFMC and WFF.
“We’re delighted to be teaming up on this event,” says WFF executive director Steve Lawson. “BFMC has proven to be a terrific addition to the cultural landscape of our region, and to be showcasing the remarkable visual effects of Jeff Kleiser makes this collaboration all the more gratifying.”
The evening will begin at 6:00pm with a cocktail reception (cash bar) in the lobby of The Beacon Cinema, followed by a presentation from Kleiser and then a screening of “Ra.One”, courtesy of EROS International.
