Below is a sampling of what Berkshire Creative Economy is working on for the next version of BerkshireCreative.org, which is slated to debut some time in June 2012.

The Creative Directory will showcase business, nonprofit, and individual members of the Berkshire Creative Economy. Presently, this directory is comprised of entries for the organizational units represented by the Berkshire Creative Economy Board.

As you can see, this directory offers varying degrees of information based on an entity’s level of membership. To the left, is a map, which will ultimately be connected to the Creative Directory and provide an alternative way of browsing the directory.

It is intended that this directory become more than just a list, but a core function of this website and the organization. It will provide Berkshire Creative’s members with the utmost of value in building awareness to prospective clients and patrons, facilitating collaboration, and above all generating business and creating jobs.

Biography Bringing people together for experiences that spark creativity and innovative thinking by making inspiring educational connections among art, history, and natural science. In 1903, Berkshire Museum founder Zenas Crane, inspired by such institutions as the American Museum for Natural Science, the Smithsonian, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, decided to blend the best attributes of these establishments in a new museum for the people of Western Massachusetts. Thanks in large part to Crane’s efforts, the broad and varied collections of Berkshire Museum include objects from virtually every continent, from important fine art and sculpture to natural science specimens and ancient artifacts. As the third-generation owner of Crane & Company, a paper manufacturer that was (and continues to be) the official supplier of paper to the U.S. Treasury, Crane invested his wealth in his community. He actively sought out art and artifacts for Berkshire Museum, and encouraged the development of collections that would bring home to the Berkshires a wide cross-section of the world’s wonders. Berkshire Museum became a “window on the world.” Crane purchased many of Berkshire Museum’s first acquisitions, including a sizable group of paintings from the revered Hudson River School. Significant works by Albert Bierstadt and Frederic Edwin Church figure prominently in the collection. The diverse collections also boast artifacts of ancient history and natural science: fossil collections, a 143-pound meteorite, an Egyptian mummy, shards of Babylonian cuneiform tablets, samplings of early Mediterranean jewelry, and representations of Berkshire ecosystems including local mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, insects, plants, and minerals. Berkshire Museum is the repository for objects associated with the lives of well-known figures in American history. The first successful expedition to the North Pole by Robert E. Peary and Matthew Henson in 1908 and 1909 was supported by Crane, and Henson’s whole-body fur suit, the sledge that made the trip, and other equipment from the venture found a home at Berkshire Museum. The writing desk of Nathanial Hawthorne and the musket believed to have belonged to Israel Bissell (a cohort of Paul Revere who made a midnight ride to Philadelphia to warn that “The British are coming!”) also are part of the extensive permanent collection. Berkshire Museum has exhibited works by some of the most accomplished artists from the United States and abroad: Gilbert Stuart, Rembrandt Peale, John Singleton Copley, Thomas Sully, Paul Cézanne, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and John Singer Sargent. In the 1930s, the Berkshire Museum was the first to commission two site-specific mobiles (then a unique form of art) from Alexander Calder, who became one of the most significant artists in the 20th century. The mobiles can be seen in the theater, on either side of the proscenium. In the 1950s, the Berkshire Museum was the first to display the work of Norman Rockwell as well as pieces by artists that challenged convention, such as Andy Warhol, Red Grooms, Robert Rauschenberg, Ellsworth Kelly, and Nancy Graves. Berkshire Museum continues to add to the collections through purchase and gift. In the 21st-century, acquisitions have focused on artists with national and international reputations who have strong connections to the Berkshires: Gregory Crewdson, Peter Garfield, Helen Febbo, Morgan Bulkeley, Stephen Hannock, and others. Well-known institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Mystic Seaport, the Smithsonian Institution, the Guggenheim, and the Tate Gallery have all borrowed objects from Berkshire Museum’s fine collections. Original exhibitions created and curated by Berkshire Museum staff, incorporating items from the collections, travel to other museums. Armed and Dangerous: Art of the Arsenal is on view at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Memphis, Tennessee, now through March 11, 2012. In 2008, Berkshire Museum completed Phase II of an extensive renovation which included the replacement of the copper roof, the new 3,000-square-foot Feigenbaum Hall of Innovation, the restoration of the fireplace and Stirling Calder fountain in the art deco Crane Room, and the installation of a heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) system.

Biography Chesterwood, a National Trust Historic Site, is the country home, studio and gardens of America’s foremost sculptor of public monuments, Daniel Chester French (1850-1931), creator of the Minute Man and Abraham Lincoln for the Lincoln Memorial. Situated on 122 acres in the idyllic hamlet of Glendale near Stockbridge, Massachusetts, the property and its buildings were donated to the National Trust for Historic Preservation by French’s only child, Margaret French Cresson (1889-1973). Inspired by the natural beauty of the Berkshire Hills, French purchased the former Marshall Warner farm in 1896. Each year, during the month of May, he left his permanent home and studio in New York for six months and moved with his family to Chesterwood, where he worked on over 200 public and private commissions. Many of French’s plaster sketches, including models of his Abraham Lincoln for the Lincoln Memorial, are on view today in his Studio as well as in the permanent exhibit, Daniel Chester French: Sculpting an American Vision, in Barn Gallery. In 2010, visitors to Chesterwood are invited to explore An Artist’s Landscape, a self-guided tour of the beautiful formal gardens and woodland paths created by French himself. Chesterwood is a Historic Site owned and operated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and recognized as a National and Massachusetts Historic Landmark. Allison focuses on creative, client-pleasing design solutions that transform living and office spaces into eco-friendly, harmonious and peaceful environments, enhancing home values and increasing workplace productivity. Allison’s early experiences influenced her sophisticated and discerning design aesthetic. A native of Berkshire County, Allison was born with a love of color, textiles and fine craftsmanship. Notes The Lion’s Den Entertainment Seven Nights a Week and Never a Cover Charge! The Lion’s Den pub, located downstairs at The Red Lion Inn, offers entertainment seven nights a week, and never a cover charge. There’s different entertainment each night, with regular appearances by local performers including David Grover, the Sun Mountain Fiddler, and the Housatonic Philharmonic, offering everything from acoustic folk to R&B, and reggae to the blues. Some nationally recognized performers have been known to grace our humble pub stage from time to time – James Taylor, Lauren Ambrose and Roger Salloom among them. On chilly nights ask for a table by the fireplace and enjoy a genuine pint of ale or stout, a glass of your favorite wine, or a mug of hot mulled cider – all accompanied by our classic pub fare. The Lion’s Den is open (until 1 a.m. on weekends), with entertainment from 9 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday and entertainment from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. House guests can access the Lion’s Den through the Tavern, or by entering beneath the red awning on Main Street . Third Thursday Trivia Nights at The Lion’s Den The Lion’s Den Pub hosts locally themed Trivia Nights every third Thursday. Local Nights will feature a game of trivia (both Trivial Pursuit- and locally-based) and prizes hosted by long-time Red Lion Inn bartender Patrick Flynn from 6:00–8:00pm, followed by live music. There will be an appetizer or entree special featuring ingredients sourced from local merchants and farmers. Test your knowledge and support the Berkshires on Third Thursdays at the Lion’s Den! The Den serves a variety of nightly pub specials ranging from Open-faced Prime Rib Sandwich with Mashed Potatoes to Broiled Haddock with Lemon Rice to Spaghetti and Meatballs. Notes Biography Allison Crane is the founder and owner of threes businesses – Allison Crane Interiors; Places + Spaces and Willowbrook Designs (www.allisoncraneinteriors.com), design, home staging and estate liquidation companies based in the Berkshire County. Allison focuses on creative, client-pleasing design solutions that transform living and office spaces into eco-friendly, harmonious and peaceful environments, enhancing home values and increasing workplace productivity. Allison’s early experiences influenced her sophisticated and discerning design aesthetic. A native of Berkshire County, Allison was born with a love of color, textiles and fine craftsmanship. As a child, she learned the skills of knitting and sewing and developed a lifelong understanding of fabrics and structure. She also discovered an early affinity for the culinary arts and spent many happy hours in the kitchen baking—when she wasn’t rearranging her bedroom. Earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Syracuse University coupled with pursuing a lifelong passion for color & design, has laid a solid foundation to which she’s able to carry forward in her work with her clients.
